Maggie’s offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. Warm, welcoming and full of light and open space, the unique Maggie’s Centres are designed by leading architects to be uplifting places for people with cancer and their loved ones.
The site for Maggie's centre is Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton, Surrey. As a designer, I was expected to creat designs from every angle and consider consider the influence design and architecture can have on the empowerment of cancer therapy through this project.
I was inspired by the way of composing spaces in Korean traditional houses and colour schemes from Korean traditional papers.
In Korean Traditional House, there is a courtyard in the centre of the house for communication between families whilst connecting individual buildings. By being placed separately, individual buildings could secure privacy and have their own backyards. In terms of this arrangement, I thought this courtyard would be the heart of in Maggie’s centre with the fuction of the kitchen.
